Are you carrying baggage from the past? (How to Heal from Past Trauma)
Do you ever feel like you’re constantly dragging luggage around with you? But it’s not cute bikinis for your trip...it’s past trauma that you’re holding onto.
Let’s get into some common questions about handling trauma.
Btw I’m not a psychologist or therapist...this is just what I’ve learned from dealing with my own trauma.
Is therapy right for me?
IMO EVERYONE should go to therapy. Everything in your life couldn’t have been perfect and you have to learn how to cope with those things. You have to learn how to communicate effectively. Therapy teaches you that. Smart people go to therapy!
What if I’m scared to go to therapy?
I get it. Who wants to open THAT can of worms? Therapy can be hard...like really hard. Digging into past issues AND letting someone know all those things you never want to talk about. But what you get out of it is totally worth it. You’ll be more confident, happy, and sure of yourself. Going to therapy was one of the best things I’ve ever done for myself.
How do I find a good therapist?
Finding a good therapist is like finding a good husband. You can’t go on one date and expect to find the right one! Just like you can’t expect to instantly find the perfect therapist for you. So don’t be afraid to try a few before commiting to someone. I went to a therapist when I was a kid and felt like I got NOTHING from it. I went to a different therapist as an adult and it CHANGED MY LIFE.
To find the right therapist for you, I’d look into what kind of therapy they do and if those modalities make sense for what you want to work on. I looked into different types of therapists and decided I wanted one that practiced EMDR therapy.
Also, make sure it’s someone you feel like you can open up to. There’s no point in going to therapy if you’re not going to be honest with them! That’s the only way they can help you.
What’s EMDR therapy?
I’ve talked about going to EMDR to heal from my past trauma but until about a year ago I had no clue what EMDR therapy was! EMDR therapy is a form of therapy that specifically helps you heal from past trauma. You don’t forget the trauma, but you no longer have such negative feelings towards it. It allows you to separate yourself from the trauma and move past it.
I hope this post makes you seriously consider going to therapy!
Xoxo,
Azalee
